The birds were caught by local hunters

As many as 85 wild birds, captured by hunters, were freed into the wilderness of Rajshahi’s Bhela Beel on Tuesday afternoon.

Of the birds, 60 are Kalem or Purple Swamphen, three Sarali or Lesser whistling ducks, one Dahuk or White-breasted waterhen, and one Jolmoyur or Pheasant-tailed jacana.

The birds were released in the wetland situated between Paba and Godagari, confirmed Rajshahi Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Divisional Forest Officer Zillur Rahman.

Officials rescued the birds from the hunters at Narikelbaria village in Durgapur upazila of the district on Saturday night and kept them in a bird rehabilitation centre. Forest department officials fined hunters Gaziar Rahman Tk20,000 and Zahidul Islam Tk25,000. 

Later, the birds fit enough to survive were released on Tuesday through a ceremony. The others need more time to be independent.

Forest Officer Zillur said that the volunteers in every union of the area were working to conserve nature.

Senior officials of the wildlife management and nature conservation department and local representatives were present at the program.
