Since 2017, Bangladesh has played host to an increasing number of Rohingya refugees in an attempt to provide them.
With a secure environment away from the horrors of their own government’s ethnic cleansing operations.
While a commendable humanitarian move, this has also, undoubtedly, been a large burden for the nation to deal with.
Despite the many pleas to the international community for assistance in the safe repatriation of the refugees, not much has actually been done to ensure their return.
This is, in large part, owing to the dangers and mass genocide the Rohingya community will likely still be subjected to in their home country.
To that end, until the Myanmar government is held accountable for their heinous crimes, a safe return may be out of the question.
There’s reason to be hopeful, however.
The International Court of Justice’s ruling on the case of Myanmar’s objection to genocide on Friday could largely impact the way we move forward with the issue at hand.
The ICJ ruling against Myanmar’s objection would allow for the case to continue, and the atrocities of the nation will finally be showcased for the world to judge.
This could very well facilitate a safe repatriation process, which is extremely encouraging.
However, there remain certain concerns in this regard.
The time it would take for the case to play out would also delay the Rohingya’s return to Myanmar, which is proving to be unsafe and taxing for both the refugees and Bangladesh.
Moreover, there is no way to really enforce the World Court’s ruling.
In spite of the concerns that may arise, there is no doubt that this ruling is of great importance, in that it will push the cause forward and dictate our next move.
The world in general has been sitting on this humanitarian crisis for far too long now.
Whatever the consequences of the ruling, we must immediately join forces to end the barbarity on Myanmar’s part and help the Rohingya go back home.
