The dream for Bangladesh has always been to be a country where every single citizen feels valued.
There are many indicators which collectively define a nation but, above all.
A nation is defined by how it thinks about and cares for those in society that are most disadvantaged, most marginalized.
To that end, it is extremely heartening to hear Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speak positively about children with special needs.
Those in our society who are physically-challenged, rightfully stating that they too are part of society.
Indeed, it is those of us who are more fortunate in society that have a collective responsibility to ensure.
That those with special needs are never made to feel isolated or like second-class citizens.
And that they live a happy and fulfilling life as is the right of every citizen in Bangladesh.
However, of course, it is the government which holds the chief responsibility of ensuring that society is not considering these individuals as an afterthought.
To that end, it was also encouraging to hear the PM announce a Tk10 crore fund for the purpose of sports for physically challenged people and children with special needs.
It is initiatives such as this which will also define us as a nation, not just our exemplary growth or the fulfilling of our economic milestones.
The dream for Bangladesh has always been to be a country where every single citizen feels valued and appreciated.
We hope that we continue to see more such initiatives from the authorities to create a more inclusive society.
And get us closer to that goal — of being an equitable, prosperous nation.
